What Are Worm Castings?
Before you get overly squeamish, give us a chance to explain a little about worm castings. Simply put, Earthworm Castings are cylindrical pieces of excrement formed and passed through a worm’s digestive tract. A cast is the end-product of breaking down organic matter by an earthworm’s gut. Castings are none other than worm poop!
Worm Castings, aka ‘Vermicast’, is a “super humus organic fertilizer” that contains water-soluble nutrients and serves as a premium and safe soil conditioner for all types of plants. Worm manure is Mother Nature’s purest form of slow release, all-natural, nutrient-rich organic plant food.
The process of producing vermicompost is called vermicomposting. Vermicompost is an excellent, organic fertilizer and is not the same thing as worm castings.
Garbage In, Garbage Out
Whether you’re producing worm castings, use IBM’s Watson to play Jeopardy or value raising healthy children… it’s true. Garbage in, garbage out (GIGO). “Garbage in” will only result in the output of inferior quality worm castings, a loser computer, and sick kids.
You better believe that what worms eat matters. Why? Because their diet will ultimately determine the quality of the worm castings you buy…big time. When worms are treated like kitchen sink garbage disposals and are fed an unbalanced diet of trash and eat literal junk-food, the castings they excrete won’t be as “rich”. They will lack in quality and quantity of the nutrients your soil and plants require to thrive!
Worms That Eat Like Royalty
At Rocky Mountain Worm Co., we feed our worms a proprietary mixture of organic vitamins, nutrients and minerals for optimizing their health. Our current worm feed blend is the result from years of relentless research, scientific trials, and interpreting lab tests/soil reports…then it’s “wash, rinse, repeat”.
