- Rocky Mountain Organic Supply ,Worm Cocoons Instructions and Information We have a controlled environment that our worms live in at our store. Once the cocoons leave us we no longer control that environment. Because of this, we cannot be responsible for what happens to your cocoons once they leave our store. This applies to shipping, handling and introduction to their new environment, and your following care. The material these cocoons are shipped in is the same material we use in hatching the cocoons into baby worms for our own operation. It contains the same count per volume that we use. Simply, it is the same material that we use. It all comes from the same bin. We guarantee fresh product and living cocoons, as we only sell and ship within 5 calendar days after harvesting. Cocoons paid for prior to Saturday are shipped the following week. Cocoons are harvested every other weekend. We reserve the right to postpone shipping when it can be determined temperatures may be harmful to the life within the cocoon. This is for your benefit and that of the unhatched worms. Packaging for shipping exceeds normal methods, but does not guarantee there will be no damage during shipping. We are not responsible for shipping and handling of the carrier. FAQ: Why don’t I see the worm eggs? The material that is shipped to you is called hatch material. It’s what contains the worm cocoons. Cocoons are about 1/8” in size. They are mostly covered with dark, dirty covering. It takes extensive washing and tedious picking to separate out the cocoons. That process usually is harmful to the cocoon, sacrificing it for counting. That is not recommended if you want to hatch the cocoons. We periodically do that to monitor the cocoon density for our own hatching. How do I hatch them? Worm cocoons need warmth to hatch. 75 to 80 degrees is recommended for these. Hatching naturally occurs at lower temperatures, more slowly. When worms hatch, there are several worms per cocoon and as you can imagine, they are very small. They look like little pink threads. It will be difficult to see without them disturbing them and their home. Digging and looking for them is not recommended. They are fragile. In about 2 months they should be larger than 1” long. How do I introduce the worm cocoons to my compost? Make sure your compost pile is decomposing and is moist and damp. Bury the worm cocoons about 6 inches into the compost. Cover the top of the pile with mulch or other to minimize intense sun heat on the surface. Keep moist.
